A Daring History!
In the previous centuries, many theatres established in London were bound by censorship under Lord Chamberlain’s office. But since the Arts Theatre was a member’s only theatre, it was free of censorship laws. It could easily showcase daring and risque performances.
For years, it allowed budding theatre groups and indie artists to find an audience amongst Britain’s elite theatre lovers. At the same time, the Arts stirred the theatre scene of London with controversial yet artistically excellent productions.
The Arts opened with a Herbert Farjeon revue called Picnic. In subsequent years, it produced Young Woodley by John Van Druten, Oscar Wilde by Stokes Brothers, and a ballet performance of La fête étrange.
These became an instant favourite of its audience and got the theatre the “pocket national theatre” title.
If you too want to soak in the appeal of the Arts Theatre and all that it has to offer, it’s best to book a seat right away! So go ahead and reserve your seat.

The current Arts Theatre underwent a renovation and overhaul, an additional floor to the space. It now has two rehearsal rooms available for artists to book and practice before their shows. Moreover, it houses a studio theatre called Above the Arts.
There are other attractive features like the basement Covent Garden Social Club and the Arts Theatre Cafe located right inside the building. But the best part about the theatre is its impressive list of productions.
The Arts Theatre has produced some amazingly reputed performances in the past decades, including Another Country by Julian Mitchell, Closer to Heaven, The Vagina Monologues, etc. These were incredibly successful and received widespread critical acclaim like never before, propelling the theatre’s popularity by miles.
